Design
The Copper Spur UL1 is Big Agnes’s one-person version of its long-running Copper Spur line. This
generation drops the “HV” from the name and moves the rainfly and floor to the brand’s HyperBead fabric,
a 15D nylon with 20D solution-dyed ripstop rated to 1500 mm. The tent body pairs breathable 15D nylon
with 15D polyester mesh.
It is fully freestanding, built on DAC Featherlite NFL and NSL poles with pressfit connections. Entry is
from the side through a single door, and the vestibule door can be propped into an awning with trekking
poles. Big Agnes lists a large overhead bin pocket for storage and vents both low on the vestibule doors
and high on the fly.
Size and weight in context
REI lists a minimum trail weight of 2 lb and a packaged weight of 2 lb 6 oz. The floor measures 88 inches
long and tapers from 38 inches wide at the head to 28 at the foot, for 20 sq ft in total, with a 9 sq ft
vestibule and 38 inches of peak height. It packs to about 4 x 18 inches.
Compared with the NEMO Hornet OSMO 1P, the
Copper Spur UL1 lists a heavier minimum weight but a larger vestibule and a fully freestanding frame
rather than a semi-freestanding one. If you need room for a partner, see the two-person
Copper Spur UL2. You can line these up
side by side on the tent comparison page.
Who it suits
This tent fits solo three-season backpackers who want a shelter that holds its shape on rock slabs or
tent platforms where stakes are hard to place, and who like keeping a pack out of the rain under a
roomy vestibule. Hikers chasing the lowest possible weight, or those who sleep on extra-wide pads, may
want to compare floor widths and weights before choosing. For more on season ratings, see
3-season vs 4-season tents.
