Suits

  • Backpackers who want large vestibules for packs and boots
  • Anyone prioritizing a durable 30D floor over the lowest possible weight

Worth knowing

  • At 1.54 kg minimum weight it's heavier than newer ultralight two-door tents such as the Dragonfly OSMO (1.2 kg).
  • The 1,200 mm fly coating is typical for lightweight tents; a well-tensioned pitch matters in heavy rain.
  • A 3-season design with mesh in the inner tent.

Skip it if: Every ounce counts; newer two-door tents list 300 g or more less.

Model note. Specs are from the Hubba Hubba NX 2-Person listing on Cascade Designs' European store (Cascade Designs is MSR's parent company), where it was listed as available on the date checked. MSR has revised this tent over the years and some retailers list later versions under the plain "Hubba Hubba" name with different weights, so confirm the version on any listing before buying.

The Hubba Hubba NX is MSR’s freestanding two-person backpacking tent and a long-running design in its range. This overview uses the specifications MSR’s parent company publishes for the NX.

Design

A single hubbed DAC Featherlite pole forms a freestanding frame with two side doors. Each door has its own vestibule of 0.81 m² (8.75 sq ft), larger than many lightweight rivals, which leaves room for a pack and boots on each side. The fly is a 20D ripstop nylon with a 1,200 mm polyurethane and silicone coating; the floor is a heavier 30D ripstop with a 3,000 mm coating, which helps with abrasion and kneeling pressure.

MSR also lists a Fast & Light weight of 1.35 kg for its minimal pitching option, for trips where you want to leave parts of the tent at home.

Size and weight in context

The 2.7 m² floor (213 x 127 cm, rectangular) is the same area as several competitors, and the rectangular shape keeps the full width at the foot end. At 1.54 kg minimum and 1.72 kg packaged, it gives up about 300 g to newer ultralight two-door tents in exchange for the tougher floor and bigger vestibules.

Who it suits

A good fit for backpackers who’d rather carry a little more weight for durability and covered storage, and for trips where you’ll spend time in the tent waiting out rain. Compare it directly with similar tents on the compare page.
