The Copper Spur is Big Agnes’s best-known ultralight backpacking tent. The two-person version, long sold as the Copper Spur HV UL2, is now listed by REI simply as the Copper Spur UL2.
Design
Two poles in a hubbed DAC NFL frame create a freestanding shape with steep, near-vertical walls, which is where the earlier “HV” (high volume) name came from. That shape gives a 40 in (about 102 cm) peak height and more usable space at shoulder height than the floor area alone suggests.
There are two doors and two 9 sq ft vestibules. Big Agnes’s HyperBead fabric is used for the fly and floor, a 15-denier nylon with 20-denier solution-dyed ripstop and a 1,500 mm waterproof coating.
Size and weight in context
At a listed 2 lb 10 oz minimum and 3 lb packaged, it sits alongside the lightest freestanding two-door tents. The 29 sq ft floor tapers from 52 in at the head to 42 in at the foot, a common way to save weight.
The trade-off for the low weight is thin floor fabric. A footprint is worth considering if you often pitch on rough ground.
Who it suits
Backpackers who want two doors and good headroom at close to the lowest weight in the category. If floor durability or larger vestibules matter more, compare it with the MSR Hubba Hubba NX 2 on the compare page.
