What Rab lists
The men’s Borealis Hooded Jacket is a softshell made from Rab’s Matrix fabric, a single-weave stretch nylon at 130 g/m². Rab says the fabric is now recycled: 88% of the outer fabric and 78% of the jacket overall. Both the fabric and the finished product are listed as free of fluorocarbons (PFAS), and the water-repellent treatment is fluorocarbon-free.
The hood is low-volume and designed to sit under a climbing or ski helmet. The front closes with a YKK Vislon zip with a chin guard, and storage is two hand pockets. The hem adjustment is kept low-profile so it sits comfortably under a harness, and the cuffs are elasticated rather than fitted with tabs. Rab lists a slim fit, a weight of 273 g (9.6 oz) and a center back length of 71.5 cm (28.1 in), both for a size M.
Rab pitches it as a multi-activity piece for running, climbing and ski touring, where breathing well and blocking some wind matter more than keeping out rain.
What isn’t published
Rab gives no breathability figure and, as expected for a softshell, no waterproof rating. There is no mention of a stuff pocket. Our breathability guide explains how those numbers work for jackets that do publish them.
Who it suits
Based on its specs, this jacket suits climbers, ski tourers and fast hikers who stay active in cool, windy conditions and want a hood that works with a helmet. It is not a substitute for a rain shell; pair it with something like the Outdoor Research Helium UL or the Marmot PreCip Eco when rain is likely. Compare published specs in the jacket comparison.
